Assign a Static IP address to eth0

Postby jbv » Sat Dec 29, 2012 3:33 am

There are two ways you can ensure FoxyRoxyLinux is assigned a static IP address.
Both require a minor change to the syslinux kernel boot line found in /syslinux/syslinux.cfg
From within FoxyRoxyLinux this file is located at:/live/image/syslinux/syslinux.cfg

The option is "ip="
If you leave this option blank with no parameters, the system will use the contents of /etc/network/interfaces

Alternatively, you can specify the network parameters as follows ...
Code: Select all
ip=eth0:192.168.1.50:255.255.255.0:192.168.1.1
<where>
ip=[interface]:[IP_address]:[netmask]:[gateway]

Summary: To configure a static IP using /etc/network/interfaces
Code: Select all
<Below is an extract from my syslinux.cfg file>

label live-bigmem
   menu label Live 686-BigMem
   kernel /live/vmlinuz3
   append initrd=/live/initrd3.img boot=live config persistent ip= max_loop=128 quickreboot noprompt noautologin

<Below is a copy of my /etc/network/interfaces file>

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto eth0
allow-hotplug eth0
iface eth0 inet static
  address 192.168.0.50
  gateway 192.168.0.1
  netmask 255.255.255.0
  network 192.168.0.0
  broadcast 192.168.0.255
  dns-nameservers 192.168.0.1

If you are using 05-FoxyConfig. I suggest you drop /etc/network/interfaces in there.

Cheers, Brenton
